FAQs:

  • Ffidil Fawr is a three-day Welsh traditional string music retreat where players come together to learn tunes, develop technique, and play music in a friendly, supportive environment. The weekend blends traditional learning by ear with clear teaching methods and opportunities to play together in sessions and the Ffidil Fawr Orchestra.

  • The course is open to bowed string players of all abilities. Whether you’re a beginner, a classical musician exploring folk styles, or an experienced traditional player, there are classes and groups designed for different levels.

  • Ffidil Fawr is designed for bowed string instruments including fiddle (violin), viola, and cello. You’re welcome to bring other instruments for the evening sessions and informal music-making.

  • Teaching is done mainly by ear, in the traditional folk style, but sheet music is also provided for those who prefer to read notation. Participants will learn tunes, explore style and technique, and develop musical expression in a supportive group setting.

  • Participants choose a main class where they build repertoire and technique. There are also optional workshops such as improvising harmonies, accompanying songs, and exploring other fiddle styles. Evenings are dedicated to informal tune sessions and a special concert performance.

  • The retreat takes place at Stackpole Outdoor Learning Centre in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, offering accommodation, meals, and a beautiful setting for a weekend of music and community.

  • A weekend course ticket includes all classes and musical activities. It also includes lunch and dinner.

Accommodation can be booked on site at the Stackpole Centre, with options including single, twin, and dormitory rooms. Participants may also choose to book the course without accommodation if they prefer to stay locally.

When you purchase an accommodation ticket, all of your meals are included.

  • Before the course, participants receive a digital tunebook of Welsh session tunes so they can familiarise themselves with some repertoire in advance. We will also send out copies of the tunes for the main classes, but any preparation is optional, and all tunes will be taught during the classes.

  • Yes. Young musicians under 18 are welcome to attend Ffidil Fawr, but they must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or responsible adult for the duration of the weekend. This ensures everyone can enjoy the course safely while taking part fully in the music-making and community atmosphere.
